Third Monday Survey

Instead of a Third Monday class this month,

how about a Third Monday Survey!?

Like the ghost Jacob Marley in A Christmas Carol, that visited Ebenezer Scrooge followed by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-to-Come, I would like to hear from my ghosts of the past, present and future in order to steer me on the straight and narrow path of.... well, whatever path I'm on with New-trition by Carla (NTBC), I want to do it right!

Clicking the link below will take you to the Class Schedule page of my website where all you Ghosts of Yet-to-Come will find 8 questions about what you would like to see happen with NTBC classes in 2015.

The Ghosts of the Past will be happy to find a 9th open-ended evaluation question about 2014!

The Ghost of the Present is with me as I type and telling me I must get this posted before 1:00am.

I'm not as mean and hard headed as Scrooge (I don't think..), but like his character eventually transformed, I'm filled with joy and humility by the love and goodness of every one in my life.  And that includes each of you who come to classes, who are listening to me teach, and listening to your body.  Your trust is in the truth and we've been on a wonderful journey!

Thank you for your valuable input by completing this survey.  It will be open for at least a month.  I hope to get a 2015 class schedule developed by February for online webinars.

How fun - to stay at home in our cuddle-duds when it is snowing outside, with a mug of hot tea and have a desk top computer class together!

Merry Christmas to everyone who reads this!
Ronnie and I wish you a very peaceful holiday
filled with warm fuzzies and fun times!

Stay Well This Winter!!

Don't let this be you!!!

The Season is upon us,
and I’m not referring to the Holidays!

Now that sunlight is in short supply and we are cooped up inside with sneezing, coughing people, we face the dreaded ‘Cold & Flu Season’.

Health by Systems:101 Third Monday Class this month, Nov. 17th, will be on The Immune System! This bodily system is constantly at work protecting you and fighting unimaginable pathogens that find their way into your body on a daily basis.

What an ideal time to learn about your amazing Immune System and how to keep it strong this winter! You will be glad to learn that you can miss out on the usual sore throat, runny nose, cough, sinus infection, bronchitis, and worse, the flu.

This class will also discuss Autoimmune Diseases – why and how those diseases occur, and Natural Health approaches to prevent them or at least reduce their adverse effects.

Your Immune System really is your best friend!
It is time to become better acquainted!

Class will be at Panera on N. Kansas Expressway at 6pm this coming Monday, 17th.
Bring your questions and your friends for a great discussion on Staying Well this Winter!!

All you need is the air that you breathe - just to be healthy!

If you sang along with that title, then you are showing your age!

But it is true – we inhale and exhale approximately 17,280 times each day (if your respiration rate is 12 per minute).   Breathing and the beating of your heart are the only two constants that, if they cease, life ceases also, within minutes.  So that places the respiratory system at the top of our list of important things to know about our body, right?

Since your breathing is ever with you, you certainly notice when it is not functioning properly.  We can certainly figure out the ‘why’ of many pulmonary (lung) problems by first understanding ‘how’ your lungs are supposed to work.

You will learn the basics of lung structure and function in this Health by Systems:101 class on The Respiratory System, but there are three ‘out of the box’ concepts that will be emphasized.

Carbon Dioxide is the first:  Many of you have heard us refer to CO2 (about 100 times in every class).  Yet, my pathophysiology textbooks refer to CO2 as a waste product, as if it were an undesirable component to our cells and metabolism.  NOT SO!  And what does that mean to you?  This is one substance you cannot order from Amazon or find at your local health food store.

The Buteyko Method is the second: This program of exercises and strategies, identified by Dr. Buteyko, to normalize breathing and relieve symptoms of many lung diseases is worth learning about.  And it is related to concept #1 above, CO2.

Your immune system is the third:  For many years, my lung health was marked by two holidays.  Christmas and St. Patrick’s Day (or maybe Easter on a bad year).  I acquired bronchitis by the time Santa was to arrive and coughed until potatoes were supposed to be planted.  Well, that stopped about six years ago.  I may get a short-term ‘lung bug’ every other year or so, but the improvement is remarkable (and less costly).  Your immune system must be strengthened by nutrition and digestion!

So take a deep breathe… and be amazed at what just happened!

Check out the details of my Third Monday classes (the where, when & how much) at www.energyconcepts101.com.

Bring a friend and a paper bag!!  (some of you know what that is about!)

A Healthy Heart!!

Better late than never, right!!  If you thought maybe there wasn’t going to be a New-trition by Carla Third Monday class, I assure there will be!  I may be behind in getting this class announcement out, but I’m no less excited to talk about…

The Cardiovascular System

The Cardiovascular System includes your heart, arteries, capillaries and veins.  It is an amazing, complex system that transports oxygen and nutrients to every cell in your body, head to toe. This class will briefly explore the structure and function of the Cardiovascular System, but will focus on the many forms of heart disease.

Heart disease is quite prosperous for our medical system, but it can be devastating to our personal lives.  At best, a struggling heart and circulatory system causes fatigue and dysfunction.  The looming “silent killer” (essential or primary hypertension) frightens people, which just perpetuates high blood pressure further.

What can you do NOW to maintain or regain a robust, healthy Cardiovascular System?  What does the heart need to beat regularly and strong?  How can you prevent “hardening of the arteries”?  What about heart attacks?  Why does blood pressure go up?

We will have a great time talking about these questions and more!  You may find class location, time, etc.. on our website (energyconcepts101.com) on the Class Schedule page.

Don’t miss this class in a heartbeat!

Meet the Osteo Family!

If you think you've seen some very strange
looking cells so far in this
Health by Systems:101 course,
then you will enjoy meeting another
odd bunch of cells.

New-trition by Carla's Third Monday Class
on August 18th will be on

The Skeletal System!

Introducing the "Osteo" Family!
(your bone cells!)

Your Skeletal System of over 200 major bones obviously provides a framework on which to hang your beautiful physique and protect your vital organs.  But a lot of work goes on at the cell level to keep your framework strong & intact. Your bones are very much alive as these 'osteo' cells never rest. They work tirelessly, 24/7, to keep your bones durable and healthy.

"First Do No Harm" - no where in medicine is this ethical standard more violated than in the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis, the bone degenerative disease usually affecting thousands of post menopausal women, often resulting in debilitating spontaneous hip fractures.

Sadly, the nature of science has become product and disease oriented to fuel various prescription drug markets. Research on bone health is no exception.  Bone research is no longer comprehensive or objective.

In this class, Carla will discuss osteoporosis and dispel several medical, prescription  and supplement myths that are creating harm to your bones. She will also share 7 Tips to Prevent Osteoporosis.

Women of all ages need to know the truth about bone health and how to apply that truth to their daily lives. Although it is never too late to begin to build Natural Health, the sooner you begin the better when it comes to your bones.

We look forward to seeing you on the 18th.  Please visit our website for other details!

P.S. It is possible that I (Carla) may be a bit late. That will be the night of my first class that I teach at OTC which is over at 5:15pm. I will certainly rush to Panera, but I don't know what to expect at my first class - so I apologize in advance if I'm late.  My mom (Anna Beth) will be there to check everyone in as usual at 6:00pm.

Rigor Mortis and Charlie Horses

Rigor Mortis and Charlie Horses..
What do these conditions have in common??

New-trition by Carla’s Third Monday class (July 21st) will present the
sixth topic in Health by Systems:101 –

The Muscular System!

Not only will you learn what Rigor Mortis and "Charlie Horses" have in common, you will also learn how other conditions such as fatigue, weakness, restless leg syndrome, spasms, twitching, even heart failure, are all related to the same underlying muscle cell deprivation.

If you have attended the last few classes, then ‘cell deprivation’ will sound familiar to you.  This month you will learn what your muscle cells need to work properly and what you may be doing to interfere, even damage, their function.

So much to talk about!!...
  • How muscles work
  • Stress physiology
  • The importance of minerals and electrolytes in muscle contraction and relaxation
  • The myths of excessive hydration
  • The mechanisms of fatigue
  • Fatigue and aging
  • The potential harm of endurance exercise and bodybuilding
  • Concentric and eccentric exercise
Fitness and good health can actually be counteractive.  Whether you are seeking fitness for daily living or optimal sports performance, a basic understanding of 'stress physiology' will be extremely important to achieve your goals safely.

We look forward to another great time of learning with those seeking optimal natural health! Newcomers are welcome!  Old-timers - bring a friend!  See you soon!

Let's Get on Your Nerves!!!

Meet your Neurons!

I know that sounds like an introduction to some galactic alien; in fact neurons even look a bit extraterrestrial..

Neurons are not aliens, though, they are your nerve cells.  Without them you would not move, breathe, feel, smell, see, taste, think, have emotions or any other function of living.

In other words, you would not exist on any level
without these alien-looking cells.

Neurons are very clever and resourceful. To live healthfully, they depend on nutrition and a clean environment just like you and I.  When those requirements are not met or are deficient, neurons will adapt and compensate for as long as possible.  Eventually they will give up, go away or die.

The occurrence of neurological problems in
today’s world is alarming!

From ‘foggy thinking’, forgetfulness and depression to severe neurological disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia – all levels of mental impairment have a profound impact on our daily lives and those around us.

The prospect of possibly losing mental and/or physical function strikes fear in most people.  It does not have to happen to you.  But you will have to look outside of the ‘conventional medical box’ to learn the true culprits behind neurological illness.

What is going on in our foods and our environment that is damaging the human nervous system?  How can we overcome the darkness of depression without a drug? Is there anything we can do to prevent neuro-degenerative conditions?

The focus of medicine is Treatment.
The focus of Holistic Natural Health is Prevention.

Your physician can offer a prescription and/or treatment that can temporarily reduce neurological symptoms or delay severe disability.  However, prescriptions always involve side effects and the long-term use of nervous system drugs, especially, is highly questionable.

Let’s not get to that point, when there are so many
other choices we can make every day to heal our nervous system!

Health by Systems:101 - The Holistic Natural Health approach to neurological health will be the topic in this month’s New-trition by Carla’s Third Monday class on June 16th.  This is the fifth class in the series of eleven designed to teach you how to take Personal Responsibility for Personal Health. Become acquainted with your amazing Neurons and learn how to keep them happy!

Class details can be found on our website (www.energyconcepts101.com) on the Class Schedule page under “2014 Class Schedule”.  As always, bring a friend and lots of questions!

We look forward to seeing you at class!

Pineal Gland to Gonads...

Hormones – “can’t live with ‘em; can’t live without ‘em

If that describes your relationship with your hormones, then don’t miss this month’s Third Monday Class on May 19th on the Endocrine System.  This is the fourth class in the Health by Systems:101 course in which you are learning about your incredible human body one system at a time.

The Endocrine System is at the heart of holistic health!

This is where Mind/Body/Spirit/Environment all converge in the whirl of hormones coursing through your blood stream.  Hormones are known as “chemical messengers” and sometimes their message may leave you with a very negative outlook, even angry or depressed. Metabolism and energy go down while weight goes up.

What’s with that???!!!

This does not have to be an accepted “age-related” degenerative condition.  Age does matter, but chemistry matters more.  And remember that nutrients are biochemistry, so in this class you will learn what foods harm and what foods help your Endocrine System.

From the pineal gland to the gonads

This Health by Systems:101 class will introduce your entire endocrine system and their intricate on-going tango in your body.  Emphasis, however, will be on the pituitary, thyroid, and adrenal glands and on the toxic effects of estrogen.

Many questions are being asked about these topics and, as usual, the medical perspective falls short and is often flawed.

“My TSH is normal, but I know I am low thyroid”

“Why can’t I lose weight?”

“I was told Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy was
natural and would help my fill in the blank female issue”

“What does ‘estrogen receptor positive’ or
‘estrogen receptor negative’ mean?”

These are a few of the concerns and questions
that will be addressed in this Endocrine class.

Bring a friend and prepare to be amazed and enlightened!

We look forward to seeing each of you!

Out House Rules!

Bowel & Bladder –

What a lovely topic for this month’s Health By Systems: 101 class!

The sarcasm in ‘lovely’ is obvious, but there must be some way to approach the subject of elimination with appreciation rather than aversion.

The simple truth is two-fold:

1.  What comes out at the end is as important as what goes in at the beginning!
2.  What comes out at the end depends on what goes in at the beginning!

For those who might need a translation:
Your stools and the health of your colon and urinary tract
are as important as and depend upon your diet and nutrition.

Those simple truths will be discussed in class this month as well as the following related topics:
  • Colon cleanses
  • Toxic colon
  • Chronic constipation
  • Fiber
  • Kidney stones
  • Prostate health
  • Urinary tract infections
Last month you learned about your liver as a vital organ for detoxing.  This month you will learn the direct impact your colon has on your liver.  You will learn how you can neutralize toxins, and consequently help your liver and your metabolism, by giving your colon what it needs (and it does not need fiber).

Your urinary system is also important for different reasons in the elimination picture.  But your kidneys also play a huge role in blood pressure regulation, fluid retention and the balance of electrolytes and blood pHs.  Most of us take urinating for granted until things go wrong.  Men especially are concerned about their prostate gland, which if enlarged, can affect their urination.

Let’s talk about how to avoid chronic issues
in this important system.

Human elimination is certainly personal and private and many think it is unpleasant.   However, it is just one more indication that our bodies are designed for balance and all of our bodily systems are interrelated and connected.

We are not bashful with this topic of bowel and bladder because it is so important!  Where else are you going to be able to learn and talk about this human function from a natural health perspective?
